Pilot Collaboration between Shell and i2 to Review the Development of Integrated Supply Chain Software for the Oil Industry Pilot Collaboration between Shell and i2 to Review the Development of Intergrated Supply Chain Software for the Oil Industry

Shell Global Solutions International B.V. and i2 Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: ITWO) have agreed on a program to assess the development, in collaboration, of a fully integrated supply chain software package for the downstream oil industry. Any eventual solution would be driven by real demand and actual market dynamics. It aims to be the first on the market to offer customers an integrated, end-to-end software solution for supply chain management, covering operations from crude selection to product storage at terminals and depots and, in combination with improved business processes, would be expected to deliver significant bottom line improvements.

The collaboration on the pilot program combines i2's market leadership in developing supply chain management software solutions, with the operational experience and technology of Shell Global Solutions. It is intended that Shell companies operating downstream supply, manufacturing, and distribution businesses around the world would be among the first to implement this package.

Commenting on the announcement, Michiel Boersma, president of Shell Global Solutions said, "Being at the forefront of this type of development is a key strategic driver for our business. We believe that bringing together our worldwide industry experience in managing and improving supply chain operations, with i2's leadership in supply chain management software solutions, will give us every chance of achieving a very powerful breakthrough technology to address this yet-to-be solved business problem." The combined team is already working on the functional specification and definition phase to understand and solve the complexities of aligning supply chain operations across multiple countries, demand envelopes and refinery production centers.

"By utilizing the principles of i2's Dynamic Value Chain Management business philosophy, enhanced by i2 and Shell to meet the downstream hydrocarbon supply chain, this solution would play a critical part in the industry migration from past 'disjoined push' production strategies to a necessary market 'pull' strategy, with production and distribution decisions being global, optimal and consumer oriented," said Philip Crawford, president, i2 EMEA. "We are delighted to explore working with an organization that lives and breathes practical consultancy to improve downstream margins. By enabling intelligent control through increased visibility in the hydrocarbon value chain, over more precisely where and when certain products should be produced and distributed, we would be able to provide value to the industry and ultimately its customers."
